As heatwaves become more frequent, hotels, offices and factories are investing in new ways to keep buildings cool and workers productive. The boutique La Maison Hotel in Munich thought it was ready for rising temperatures. But after Germany's recent heatwave hit 41 degrees Celsius, the guests are asking for air conditioning service which is not available right now. Businesses across Germany are now investing billions of euros in cooling technologies. But the cost of doing nothing could be even greater. According to Allianz Research, rising temperatures are driving up business costs by reducing productivity and increasing energy use. Every degree above 30 degrees Celsius cuts worker productivity by around 3 percent per hour. Sick leave rises by 3.5 percent, climbing to 6 percent during prolonged heatwaves. Across Germany, those losses could add up quickly. Demand for cooling is also pushing up electricity prices. During the last heatwave, Germany's wholesale electricity prices jumped more than fivefold overnight, as solar power output dropped while demand for cooling remained high. The report said that by the end of 2025, the total number of Chinese unicorn enterprises reached 376, an increase of 35 from the previous year. The total valuation was close to 1.45 trillion U.S. dollars, with an average valuation of 3.85 billion U.S. dollars, an increase of 510 million U.S. dollars from the previous year. The number of super unicorns increased to 12. The report also showed that among China's unicorn companies, nearly 90 percent are private enterprises, accounting for 88.6 percent of the total. High-tech enterprises account for 66.5 percent, and "little giant" enterprises -- those that use specialized and sophisticated technologies to produce novel and unique products -- account for 34.8 percent. Market entities continue to unleash the vitality of innovation. Notably, hard technologies have become the core foundation of China's unicorn companies. Last year, the number of unicorn companies with cutting-edge technologies reached 320, accounting for 85.1 percent of the total, up 14.9 percentage points from the previous year. "I think it's just sad considering it's a small business, it's in the community," said Nydia, who frequents the Taqueria El Sabor Del Parque Mexican Restaurant. "You shouldn't want to break into an area that's feeding your community so it's just sad." Baltimore Police confirm officers responded to a commercial burglary at 3 a.m. on Wednesday at the Mexican eatery on Eastern Avenue. Surveillance video shows three suspects shattering the glass door and entering the restaurant. Police said they took the register before running from the location. "According to the owner, it was basically a smash, grab and run type of situation where they ran in and grabbed the cash box and then ran out," said Arch McKown, who is on the Baltimore Police Southeastern District Community Relations Council. "But the cash box is empty because they don't ever keep money overnight." McKown expressed frustration knowing this isn't the first time the business has had to replace a more than $500 door due to people breaking-in.
